Hallway design and interior corridor in a small area

In any apartment or house, the hallway acts as a “walk-through” room. This is both the “face” of the apartment, according to which guests can judge the character and tastes of the owners, and its most important “transport” node. According to standard layouts, all the doors to other premises of the dwelling are located exactly in the hallway. Often, the dimensions of this room leave much to be desired, so the design will have to be refined to fit all the necessary elements of furniture and not clutter up space with them.

Finishing and materials

For finishing floors, it is better to abandon outdated linoleum and traditional laminate flooring in favor of ceramic tiles. This option wins on several points:

  • All the street dirt on the shoes stretches and settles in the hallway. This room is on a par with the kitchen washes more often than others. Ceramic or porcelain tiles are not afraid of any water or detergents. Frequent cleaning will not affect their appearance either.
  • In the winter, not only water but also aggressive means used by public utilities for treating the streets settle on shoes. Dear laminate like substances can cause irreparable harm, while the floor tile they are for nothing.

Modern laminate production technologies also suggest its strength, but the material is characterized by increased “slipperiness”, which is undesirable in the hallway. The parquet board is created from natural wood, therefore, despite the special processing of the material, it is most susceptible to moisture. For the hallway, this type of coverage is not suitable. Carpet looks beautiful, gives the room a touch of chic, but it will require constant care. If, however, you decide to lay a carpet, then it must be combined with the lower layer of hard coating. This technique will extend the life of the material. Walls are most often treated in two ways:

  • Ground and stick with wallpaper;
  • Primed and painted.

Traditionally, the hallway is decorated in calm brown colors. For small rooms with an area of up to 4 square meters, they adhere to a simple principle: the floor should be a few tones darker than the color of the walls and in no case the opposite. The ceiling is usually undeservedly forgotten. It is painted in a classic white color and stops at this, but there are a lot of options for the original ceiling trim. If the room is not only tiny, but also with a low ceiling, then you really have to refrain from experiments, opting for pastel shades and the play of light.

With high ceilings, the front of work will grow. They can be made step, tension or panel. In multilevel it is easy to hide additional sources of illumination, and panel perfectly hide flaws and curvature of the walls. Panel ceilings made of plastic or plasterboard are not inferior to hanging ones in aesthetics, but in addition they are distinguished by reasonable prices and are easy to install. For multi-level ceilings drywall fits perfectly: it easily takes any shape, so your imagination will not have to be limited only to sharp corners.

Wallpaper or painting

The choice of wallpaper depends on the general style in which the entire hallway will be sustained. For modern “bold” directions, “catchy” wallpapers with bright prints and geometric patterns will do. For rooms in classic styles, they use either plain wallpaper of soothing colors, or with a gentle, neat pattern. If the hallway has a square shape and low ceilings, it is worth considering the option of wallpaper with vertical lines that stretch upward and carry along the space of the room. The same move is used in wide corridors, where the shortage of space is concentrated at the top. Wallpaper with horizontal stripes suitable for rectangular hallways with high ceilings. Under the vertical lines is meant not only a clear pattern on the wallpaper, we can talk about the texture, which is similar to the fabric. The fabric imitation consists in depicting the structure of the pattern of fibers that stretch in one direction, thereby setting the “geometric” pattern. Silver and gold embossed wallpapers, imitating fabrics or metal “cut”, have become the trend of the year.

Painting the walls of the hallway does not lose in comparison with the wallpaper. Moreover, it even has a “strong” advantage: such walls can be washed without harm to the coating. Before carrying out the main work, the walls are puttyed (if necessary), primed and ground. Acrylic primer will take at least a day for complete drying. Taking into account the peculiarities of the room, the best materials for painting will be:

  • Acrylic dispersion;
  • Alkyd enamel;
  • Butadiene-styrene water dispersion.

Any type of paint is applied in two layers: the first with a brush and the second with a roller. Original on painted walls looks decorating with other materials. For example, in the corner of the hallway, a corner of the brickwork suddenly opens. The move is fully consistent with the principles of industrial style.

It is important to know. Putty is used not only to "gloss over" defects. Gypsum putty must be applied over the entire surface area with a thin layer. Its after drying and polishing. The more carefully the plaster is ground, the smoother your walls will be. As the main tool is better to use an abrasive mesh.

Color spectrum

If we are talking about small, “typical” hallways, then special experiments with flowers will not work. It is enough to recall the golden rule: "Dark colors make the room smaller, and light colors visually expand it." So, black, dark shades of brown, gray, blue, red as a background will have to be rejected immediately. They may be present in the setting, but only in portions, in the form of small elements. The choice can only be between two options:

  • Warm colors;
  • Cool colors.

Yellow, orange, lilac, brown, beige, pink, herbal green will make the hallway "soft" and warm. Blue, purple, turquoise, blue, azure, marsh green, gray will add to the atmosphere of the cold. Each of the above colors is combined with neutral white and black. A moderate number of colors in combination for interior design is considered to be three. You can choose, for example, one universal, one cold and one warm. Two colors are used as the basis of the design, and details are given to the third to be torn apart. For such modern trends as the Scandinavian style, minimalism, industrial, you can use a combination of two cold colors and one neutral. Excessive rigor of the hallway fits into the concept of these areas.

Lighting

For small hallways, the presence of “surround” lighting is especially important. There are several ways to achieve this effect:

  • When decorating the walls, make decorative niches into which additional light sources will be built.
    If you cannot work with the wall, then use additional furniture for additional lighting: a narrow and tall shelving with a pair of “illuminated” vases or sculptures.
  • At each “step” of a multi-level ceiling, lines of small point light sources are placed, the wiring is “sewn up” behind the panels, which allows preserving the aesthetic beauty of the finish.
  • In a separate area, install a box of frosted glass, behind which to hide powerful lights. Most often, such a decorative panel is installed on the walls where mirrors could be placed.
  • Design a horizontal panel with turned light bulbs on the wall just above human height.
    Install a few elegant, "elongated" lamps on the floor or sconces on the walls.

Try to use as many different light sources as possible. The more "rays" directed in different directions, the wider the hall will appear.

Furniture

Since we are dealing with a typical hallway for the Khrushchev, then we will have to work with a minimum of furniture. Unfortunately, to fit all that is needed in such premises will not work. Something will have to donate necessarily. Storage space can not be discounted. Outerwear, hats and shoes should be stored somewhere. There are two options:

  • Cupboard;
  • Hanger with a cabinet under it for storing shoes.

The third method may be the installation of a dressing room, in the narrow hallways there is too little space to accommodate an additional separate room, so this solution is very difficult to bring to life.

Which option to stay depends solely on the number of residents and, accordingly, the number of their belongings. If a pile of clothes accumulates, then an open coat hanger will look sloppy and completely unaesthetic in the hallway. So the choice falls on the cabinet. Preference is usually given to wardrobes, but they also have a drawback: such furniture is rather cumbersome and there is a danger of it “eating up” the entire hallway space. To avoid an undesirable effect, “clone” the hallway in the mirror surface of the cabinet panels. Corner wardrobe is also worth considering as an option, but it is suitable only for rectangular elongated hallways. “Stealing” is only one corner; such a cabinet will leave the other three free for other interior items. As seats, you can use a universal cabinet for shoes with soft upholstery or put a few poufs, chairs. Must be in the hallway and a small chest of drawers or a table. Recently, furniture items that do not have legs have become fashionable. Beds, tables and chairs abut against the wall, where they are kept in limbo with the help of special fixings. Such "floating" chairs will add ease to the hallway and will attract the attention of surprised guests.

In modern style

The entrance hall is no exception among other rooms and, just like them, follows the general principles of the modern style:

  • Use predominantly monochromatic surfaces.
  • Among colors, a palm tree is intercepted by gray, black and white, and brown, their shades and combinations. It is acceptable to use bright “dot” cents of red, yellow or blue color.
  • Indoors, straight lines and sharp corners are larger than rounded "bends."
  • Drawings are not welcome. If they are still there, they are exceptionally low-key and soft. You can use strips of different widths and colors instead of ornaments.
  • Simplicity in furnishing. Focus on natural materials. The front door is decorated in bright colors.

The modern style allows for a small departure from its canons, because it is dynamically changing, as is the reality around us. In order to comply with its name, modern constantly accepts all new trends in designer fashion, which can be found in specialized publications.

In classic style

The classic hallway is decorated in light colors: beige, pastel shades, combinations of gray-white colors. Lined with soft floor mats. The mirrors are framed in oval-shaped frames. Wall-paper of pastel shades have gentle patterns with a set of curlicues. Paintings depicting scenes from the Middle Ages are welcome. Furniture made of natural wood in light shades on elegant, twisted legs. The presence of ceiling lamps or chandeliers of complex shape with soft curves. The use of gilding is welcome. As elements of the decor used rare things "with history" or their imitation. The ceiling is decorated with neat stucco. One of the compromise options for the adherents of the classics, who are still ready to bring elements of modern style into it, is neoclassical. This direction allows small fashionable "liberties" in the design.

Provence style

The light style of the French hinterland is easily distinguished by its characteristic features. It is peculiar to him:

  • The use of natural materials, mainly wood.
  • Bright colors: the focus is on blue, pink, delicate green in tandem with white, beige, cream colors.
  • The presence of floral patterns and ornaments.
  • The presence of decorative elements "antique".
  • Cotton and linen upholstery furniture.

In a small hallway of a city apartment with the help of Provence, you can create a cozy corner that resembles a village, fresh air and measured life of the countryside.

Instead of padded stools and strict wardrobes, wooden benches and open hangers are used. In the "aged pots" put indoor plants. Wallpapers combined: monochrome parts are combined with "merry" wallpaper with bouquets of flowers. Soft cushions on the bench, wicker baskets under umbrellas and canes, antique chandeliers, mirrors in wooden frames and carpets with patterns on the floor are all French-style details.

Loft style

Loft is a modern style, one of the "branches" of industrial. It is characterized by the use of natural materials and coarse textures. One of the mandatory elements of the direction is considered to be untreated brickwork. One wall in the hallway can be decorated with a brick. Furniture items should be as “simplified” as possible with the use of metal, stone or marble. The abundance of cold light will emphasize the severity of style. Of the shades, preference is given to the contrast of gray, white with black, blue and brick brown. If the walls are painted, then rough strokes with poorly painted places are welcome. Such negligence is considered one of the “whales” on which the direction stands. If the atmosphere of the hallway has a clear imprint of non-residential, industrial premises, then you managed to catch the mood of the style.

Hallway design 2 square meters

As a rule, hallways with an area of only 2 sq. M. have a rectangular shape. Putting massive furniture along the walls is not rational, since such a move will occupy the space and prevent free movement. In this case, the only option worth considering is minimalism. The style only welcomes the functionality of the elements. A narrow nightstand or shop on one side, and a hanger on the other. If there is a lot of things to store, then it is worth thinking about creating a separate dressing room in another room. Only seasonal clothes are left on the hanger. Using mirrors in such a tiny room is vital. They will have to add light sources at different levels. From the decor is possible only a minimum of small elements, creating a sense of being in nature.

Important advice. Finishing work is easy to do with your own hands, but the design of a 2-by-2 hallway will either have to be carefully worked out or addressed to specialists. Proper furniture placement ensures up to 80% of the success of the entire repair “campaign”.

3-4 square meters

Entrance area of 4 square meters. m is considered typical. Almost any style is suitable for its interior. This season, the focus is on wood in materials and soft light. Do not forget about the decor. One big picture on the whole free wall or a series of photos with colorful images of nature, even on the side wall of the cabinet, will look great. On the ceiling, it is recommended to mount decorative panels to match the overall color scheme. Behind the panels are hardened light sources. Do not forget about the green. A narrow and compact corner shelf in several tiers, on which pots with palm trees are placed freely, will add life to the room. A stylish corner wardrobe with a hanger, decorated in a combination of black and cream colors, will complement the atmosphere of coziness and chic.

Important advice. So that the situation was not boring, paints are brought into it with the help of paintings or entire series of works of art and their reproductions. Painting directions should overlap with the hallway design style of 4 sq m.

5-6 square meters

Entrance hall with the possibility of "playing" with space. The room can no longer be called cramped, so you can afford pleasant things in the form of hinged shelves mounted into the wall without visible fixings and bright accents. Red chairs or bright yellow shelving will no longer spoil the situation. An original solution is to place a wide aquarium mounted in a wall in such a room. Such a design move will fit into any of the modern styles. On the mirror of the closet, a matte picture can be depicted, which will gracefully emphasize the good taste of the owners of the house. For example, the image of a tree on a cliff will merge into minimalism or design with “subtle” notes of the east. You can experiment with the temperature of the light by combining cold light with warm light. The final picture can be very non-standard.

7-8 square meters

In such a hallway visually increase the volume of the room and add natural lighting aesthetically selected furniture with sliding mirrored panels. Massive, monumental things with intricate vignettes, as well as furniture with protruding corners in such an area should be avoided. They only "overload" the interior. A light-colored table or a shelf with rounded surfaces will fix the position. Depending on the height of the ceilings, you can create point light sources in stretch ceilings, or, if the ceilings are low, use local multi-level lighting (wall lamps, lamps). В прихожей, имеющей продолговатую конфигурацию, пол следует поделить на зоны, при помощи разных цветов или напольного покрытия различной фактуры (ламинат, паркет, ковролин и т.д.).If the hallway has a shape with approximately equal length and width, then this is a rather "rather big" space in which you can create an improvised lobby, placing a small sofa, coffee table, which will not interfere with the passage, and having equipped a niche under the TV.

9-10 square meters

On the floor area of 9-10 sq. M. design will be limited only by fantasy. Finishing the floor and ceiling light, glossy, will create a feeling of even more free space and light. Wooden wall panels will be in harmony with the light sources of the “warm” spectrum. Someone will allow himself the idea not to dwell on the “classics”, and playing with space by covering the floor with a 3D image (green lawn grass or forest glade, etc.) and photo wallpapers of the same subject and colors will erase the boundary of reality. In such a hallway you can place an overall wardrobe, the size more reminiscent of a full wardrobe.
