Hallway with living room: examples of design

Combining the living room and hallway is done to increase the usable area of the apartment. Modern design solutions allow to solve this problem not only from a functional point of view, but also from an aesthetic one. A typical hallway is a narrow room, stretched in length, in which several people can hardly accommodate. In the combined options, guests are given the opportunity not to crowd at the entrance, but to disperse around the room and calmly get together before leaving or undress / take off after a visit. The entrance hall is usually considered an intermediate area between the street and the house. Here dirt accumulates and it can be pulled cold from the front door. The hall combined with the living room becomes a rather risky option, because both rooms have different functional purposes. The main task of the designer is not only to smooth out these differences, but also to select a universal interior design that will unite them into a kind of hall.

Advantages and disadvantages

The obvious advantages of this combination include the following features:

  • Increased usable area. If earlier design ideas could not be solved in the same room, now there are options for their implementation in the increased quadrature.
  • The ability to install large furniture. Demolishing partitions allows you to install one closet (usually built-in) or a dressing room into two rooms. In this way, the task of storing things in two rooms at once, which usually involve the installation of such furniture separately, will be solved.
  • In the dark and “blind” corridor natural light will appear from the living room window. To swim in the sun the room will certainly not be, but its illumination will significantly improve. This will not only create a cozy atmosphere, but will also save on electricity costs.

It has a similar option and a number of minuses, all of which are related to the proximity of the hallway with the entrance:

  • Possible noise from neighbors who are in turmoil or quarrels on the landing. The problem of "alien" people in the entrances is now being solved with the help of intercoms and concierges, but there are still houses where the residents themselves arrange gatherings or noisy showdowns outside their personal apartments.
  • Cold, which can "pull" from the door. If earlier the lowered temperature in the winter period was delayed in the hallway, now the cool air from the entrance will be able to get into the room for receiving guests.
  • Smoker on the stairwell, from which spreads the smoke and the smell of nicotine.
  • Street dirt, which will drag into the living room. This problem is partially solved by placing a rug in the hallway. Home and guests must be taught to constantly wipe their feet.
Most of the drawbacks are eliminated by mounting a quality entrance door. In private houses of the minuses there is only street dirt.

Zoning methods

To combine two rooms is only half the battle. To create psychological comfort and facilitate the perception of the “two in one” room set, you need to conduct a competent zoning of the space. Its main goal is not to delimit the two rooms, but to smooth the difference between them, to ensure a smooth transition from one room to another in such a way that they together become a single composition, and separately retain their features. There are several ways to accomplish this task:

  • Color separation. The design of both rooms in this case is made on a single concept, but has obvious differences in the palette of colors. Reception attributed to the "soft", which are easily perceived visually.
  • Relief of the ceiling and floor. They create frame ledges in the border zone, such “steps” refer to obvious zoning.
  • On a similar principle, additional elements are created on the walls, most often arches.
  • Light composition. Refers to the "ghost" zoning system. It looks more impressive in combination with other ways.
  • Furniture and decor. Zoning cabinets, sofas and shelves are recommended to be carried out in rooms of identical size. In a situation with a hall and a drawing room it is better to resort to use of a decor. It can be two symmetrical statues, flower pots or soft ottomans, which are located on both sides of the conventional line.

In some cases, use mobile partitions or curtains. By the way, these elements are able to further protect the living room from the interference of the “street”.

Furniture

"To the joy of" the implementation of perhaps a long-standing dream, many owners are beginning to actively force the room with furniture, thereby nullifying the effect of the combined option. The rational arrangement of the interior decoration of the room can further increase the space. A well-designed design eliminates possible inconvenience: furniture, placed not in their places, will not only interfere with the passage, but also force you to make a number of extra gestures. The decor of the living room hallway is developed even before connecting both rooms. Designers recommend on the main problem, which forced the owners to combine (lack of space), to deliver a double blow. Including from the placement of furniture. Replace the dresser or cabinet in the hallway for a narrow and compact storage system. Here, leave only the open hanger, which does not “litter” the space. It can store the necessary minimum. The rest of the things that are not necessary during this season are transferred to the built-in wardrobe. It will become the main storage system for two rooms at once. The decor of the room, as a rule, is made in the best traditions of the living room: a sofa, a coffee table, a couple of chairs, a place for TV, a rack with books.

In this case, the combined option is applied "in the interests" of the hallway, and the living room "goes" to meet it. For this reason, the situation in the second room remains standard, with small additions that will help to “unload” a close corridor.

Wall color

It is not necessary to arrange both premises in the same color. This will create a “canvas” effect that will narrow the space and make the room dull and dull. Use the same principle of combining tones. For this purpose, take one primary color, which prevails, and its two shades. As an additional animation, use the fourth contrasting accent. Bright details are spread throughout the room in small quantities, but in no case do they draw up a transition zone. Such an error will once again underline the “artificiality” of the union, as if one room was stuck to another.

Decor

If you decide to combine the two rooms, then the decor should be given special attention. In this case, two functions are assigned to it at once:

  • Interior decoration;
  • Smooth and soft zoning.

A vertical collage of photos on the wall will conditionally split two rooms. High vases in the area of the former doorway, unobtrusively show that a completely different room begins at this point.

Lighting

Properly designed lighting system allows not only to create a warm comfort in the room, but also to emphasize the differences between its main areas. For these purposes, use complex combinations of light sources located at different levels. Ceiling chandeliers can be two or only one in the living room (the other is replaced with spotlights). The result should be a complex composition that delineates the zones from each other and emphasizes the advantages of decoration and interior.

Floors

The first thing that the person in the apartment unconsciously draws attention to is its floors. The expression “look under your feet” in this case implies not so much the presence of obstacles as a comfortable covering, which causes a feeling of reliability (you can step in here and not lose balance). Playing on the contrast of colors and textures will further divide the functional areas. Such a distinction will not be evident, there will be an impact at the subconscious level. The person will notice the differences, but will not give them special significance, and the information will be deposited in the head. The habit of walking at home in the shoes is found only in heroes of soap operas, in the harsh reality of the street stretch plumes of dirt, which will systematically have to be removed from the hallway. For this reason, it uses durable and washable coating. In the living room it is allowed to use materials in which the decorative function comes first (cork, varnished parquet).

Ceiling

Ceilings, like floors, play an important role in zoning and can perform a decorative function. Only a small change in its level will already serve as a point where the eye will “catch”, and the person will understand the unobtrusive hint: a conditional border passes here. The advantage of ceiling zoning is that it is easy to see both from the living room and from the threshold. Also for decoration use materials that have a special texture, decorative ceiling beams, tension and suspended structures. With the help of any of these options, you can not only stylishly decorate the room, but also gently show which part of it belongs to the hallway, and which part to the guest room.

Bulkheads

In this case, it means not monumental walls, but lightweight structures. In their role, decorative “barriers” made of glass, plastic or carved wood, as well as mobile versions, can act. If necessary, partitions fold and put in a special place for storage. At the rest of the time, they perform the role of a border "pillar" that does not litter the space, but on the contrary, adds lightness to it. Most often, partitions imply folding screens, on the textile surface of which thematic drawings are depicted.

Angles, supports, aisles

Those who decide to combine the hallway with the hall do not have to destroy all the elements that used to be part of the dismantled wall. You can even leave some of its area, and adapt this natural protrusion under the table top, support for a stand or shelf. The situation is similar with corners and aisles. Owners can emphasize the features of the layout by artificially putting forward a corner that “looks” toward the living room.

Built-in storage

With the help of a light, through-rack with open shelves, you can arrange the obvious separation of the two rooms. By installing this furniture against a wall or perpendicular to it, the owners will receive a new storage space for small items and an original interior partition. To emphasize its "airiness", the colors of the cabinet are chosen from light shades.

Entrance door

The front door should have good heat and sound insulation. In addition, the element will “loom” in front of your eyes all the time, because the wall that used to separate it from the rest area no longer exists. For this reason, avoid using unnecessarily bright shades in the design, as this quickly becomes boring. Also, do not make the door as neutral and inconspicuous as possible, it is impossible for it to merge with the wall decoration. Designers advise to find a middle ground in colors that will not irritate and at the same time emphasize the presence of a way out of the room.

Hallway-living room in the apartment

The idea of combining premises first came to the heads of apartment owners. These people are forced to huddle in boxes that can not be expanded. And if it is impossible to increase, then it will be necessary to demolish the generally accepted planning framework, and with it the walls. The apartments are popular options for merging kitchens and living rooms with dining rooms, study rooms with libraries, hallways with halls. In this way, imitation of fashionable studios, where everything is in one bottle, is obtained. The combination of the hallway and the living room in the apartment is more a necessity than the whim of its owners. This is a real way to transform a familiar interior beyond recognition and to place everything that previously wanted, but did not work.

Hallway living room in a private house

In private homes, the process of combining is usually thought out at the design stage. This is a pre-weighted decision, which is more of a design character, a desire to stand out among typical layouts in other private houses, than a necessity.

Staircase in the living room hallway

The staircase in this room is more common in private buildings and less often in luxurious two-storey apartments of apartment buildings. This interior element is played up in such a way that from a functional platform for moving from one floor to another, it becomes a stylish element of the situation, its conditional center, from which they “dance” when creating the overall composition. In the combined rooms, the staircase will perform the role of the main “candle on the cake”, drawing attention from the transition zone to itself. Or, with a good location, it will itself become the natural demarcation of the two rooms.

Conclusion

The hall is conditionally the “face” of the house, the very first room, by the appearance of which guests can already judge the tidiness and taste preferences of the owners. The expansion of its space allows you to breathe "full chest" in the once cramped room, which usually deprive the owners of attention. A neat appearance and a well-executed combination will allow judging the owners as extraordinary individuals who are not afraid of risky experiments.
