Stylish and unusual wall decor fabrics - a great way to create a special atmosphere in the living rooms of the house. This finishing option allows you to bring into any design zest, make it stand out and as comfortable as possible for living. The work on decorating walls with fabrics should begin with the choice of materials. This applies to the type and quality of paintings, their colors. Appropriate color range, the presence of patterns or their absence will affect the possibility of complete or partial changes to the interior. You also need to carefully study the information about the methods of attachment and choose the one that the owners will be able to do with their own hands. Consider the advice and instructions of experts in the choice of fabrics, their fixation, the rules of subsequent care and you can easily transform your apartment and make it unique.

The history of the design of the walls with a cloth

The use of fabrics for decorating walls dates back to ancient Rome. Craftsmen made luxurious canvases from wool, flax, and painted them with patterns. The widespread use of such materials originated in the XII century and in Western Europe. The so-called tapestries were woven carpets that completely covered the walls. Of course, only representatives of the nobility could afford such luxury. The main plot of such fabrics became biblical motifs. Later (about the 15th century) in Paris they created an absolutely new bright look of “milfleur” canvases. Their main feature was the selection in the center of a hero, plot, animal. The background of such fabrics was dark, and around the woven thematic center there were more numerous small flowers and leaves. And in 1633, the Gobelins brothers created a large manufactory for the production of such fabrics for decorating houses. Known such paintings today: they are known to us under the name tapestries. Their widespread use ceased after the appearance of paper wallpaper in the 18th century.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the fabric wall decoration is the creation of a special homely atmosphere: even the wooden decoration is unable to improve the interior so much. The other advantages of decorating walls with fabrics include:

  • the ability to create a common composition of finishes and identical upholstery upholstered furniture;
  • environmental friendliness of most materials;
  • increased sound insulation of walls;
  • high resistance of tissues to mechanical damage;
  • maintaining good vapor permeability of the walls;
  • quick installation without joints (or just 1-2 joints on a long wall);
  • the possibility of additional inconspicuous sound insulation and insulation (although not feasible with all types of fastening fabrics).

As for the drawbacks of such decoration, it is worth remembering: the fabric will collect dust, so it will require frequent cleanings. Cloths in sunny rooms can quickly burn out. The cost of the material itself (even when fixing the fabric with your own hands) is quite high, and fixing the fabric near the electro points is a rather difficult job.

Material selection

The best solution for decorating walls in the living room with a cloth will be a selection of special canvases designed specifically for fastening as finishing. They are completely safe (painted with harmless paints), retain their brightness well for a long time, but they are very expensive. The inexpensive options include furniture fabrics (Jacquard, tapestry). Dense weaving cloths provides ease while maintaining integrity. Such fabrics slowly burn out. An additional advantage is the creation of good sound insulation in the rooms. It is acceptable to use natural fabrics with less dense weaving and, accordingly, less wear resistance (flax, cotton and sisal in pure form or with a small percentage of viscose). The use of such materials allows you to create a special comfort and guarantees an environmentally friendly interior decoration. The least often used for interior decoration are light and translucent fabrics (taffeta, batis). They are suitable for decorating individual sections of the walls.

Ways of fastening fabric

When choosing a mounting method, it is necessary to take into account the complexity of the work. If it is easy for everyone to glue the wall and stretch the fabric to a strong frame, then it is almost impossible to do a neat drapery or upholstery with your own hands without skills. In addition, in any of the ways of fixing cloths need 1-2 assistant. Properly leveling or raising the fabric is possible only when decorating a small section of the wall. For the design of the entire room one pair of hands will simply not be enough. Also note the difficulty of preparation for work: some methods require perfect alignment of the wall. Otherwise, it will be impossible to achieve a snug fit of the fabric.

If necessary, additional insulation and soundproofing of the room, choose this method of attachment, in which auxiliary materials can be placed under the fabric.

Stretching fabric

To stretch the fabric on the wall, you will need: rails (nailed around the perimeter of the wall), small nails or a furniture stapler (for attaching the canvas), a piece of fabric (the size is determined by the size of the wall + 3-4 cm at all edges for fixing), dowel The procedure is as follows:

  1. Under the level marked locations of the rails around the perimeter of the wall. They should be strictly parallel to the surface of the canvas was not overtightened.
  2. The fabric is neatly cropped (it should make a perfect rectangle or square).
  3. Reiki are fixed with dowels to the wall.
  4. The fabric is twisted 1.5-2 cm at the top twice. Then it is tilted with small carnations or furniture clips to the top rail.
  5. The fabric is stretched to the bottom rail, turnovers are also made at the bottom and the web is fixed. Similar fastening is carried out on the sides.

Under the tensioned fabric, you can fix a layer of sound insulation or insulation. They are attached directly to the wall.

Gluing fabric

The following tools and materials will be required to glue the fabric: a piece of fabric for decorating (2 cuts can be used for a long wall), putty, a spatula, paper, wallpaper glue, fine sandpaper, furniture glue, iron, small nails and slats. Work on gluing is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The fabric is checked for deformation: a small piece of it should be wetted and dried. If it has decreased in size, then the selected segment is fully soaked, dried and smoothed. This will prevent tissue shrinkage in the future.
  2. The wall is cleaned with a spatula and, if necessary, leveled with a putty. Glue is applied to the wall for paper wallpaper and paper is glued, which after drying is rubbed with sandpaper. If there are tread stains on the wall, you need to treat these areas with nitro lacquer.
  3. The wall is covered with furniture lacquer, the stretched fabric is gently glued from top to bottom (work for two people), leveled, processed with an iron to set the glue. Additionally, it can be pushed on top with slats and nails for the most accurate fixation. They can be removed after 6-12 hours. Excess fabric is trimmed, edges are processed with glue.
  4. After 3 days, if there are bumps, you need to pierce each of them and re-walk with an iron. Above and below, you can install skirting, baguettes.

Drapery

For proper draping of the wall with your own hands, you will need: screws, a lath (length equal to the length of the wall), a piece of fabric (2-3 times longer in length than the length of the wall and 10-15 cm longer than its height), small carnations, building level. The work on fixing the canvas is carried out as follows:

  1. At the top is the location of the slats below the level. The wall is cleared of debris and dust: there is no need to level the surface.
  2. The 3-4 cm fabric is tucked under the rail to the left and fixed on it with the first nail from the bottom. In this case, the canvas should have an allowance of 5-7 cm from the top. After 10-15 cm, a fold is formed along the length of the cut, it is fixed under the batten (from the back side) with a stud. Similar work is done until the end of the cut. On the right, its edge is also tucked under the bottom of the rail and fixed.
  3. The rake with the typed cloth is fixed according to the established marking. Fastening is carried out with screws from the front (that is, the stud heads will be located on the side of the wall). In the lower part, the fabric is twisted 2 times and neatly grabs or, according to a similar scheme, is fixed on another rail.

When using the slats at the bottom it is very difficult to withstand, so that a smooth wave falls and there is no deformation. Therefore, the best solution would be to fix the web only on the top plate.

Upholstery

Upholstery refers to the most time-consuming and complex methods of decorating walls. For work, you need: a piece of cloth (length and width of the wall + 10 cm of stock on all sides), slats for the frame, dowels, small studs, putty knife, putty, furniture glue and glue for heavy wallpaper, iron, thick insulation, construction level. For upholstery of the wall under the carriage fastener need to do the following work:

  1. To clean the wall with a spatula and putty level the surface.
  2. Create a drawing for the desired pattern of upholstery (with squares or diamonds). Mark the location of the rails under the level and then fix these rails to the wall with dowels (without the frame, the finished decor will have a small volume, and all its luxurious look will be lost).
  3. A similar drawing (just like the slats are located!) To draw holes on the Whatman paper and at the junction of the rails. Using a blank as a stencil, transfer these points to the fabric.
  4. On top of the rack frame, glue thick insulation for glue for heavy wallpaper.
  5. On top of the wall above the rack frame (1-2 cm above), glue the fabric with furniture glue and walk with an iron, additionally pick them up with carnations (then they can be removed). Stretch the canvas to the floor, and gently moving from top to bottom to nail the material at the points noted earlier. Thus, each point should clearly coincide with the intersection of the rack frame located on the wall.

Stylistic directions

To carry out the original design of rooms, using fabric canvases, can be in completely different styles. Highlight is the use of fabric materials instead of conventional wallpaper. Fabric trim in the following directions will look appropriate and beautiful:

  • Art Deco: for the direction it is recommended to select contrasting canvases with large repeating patterns;
  • modern: materials with abstractions, bright repetitive patterns or special models with one large pattern (similar to wallpapers) are suitable for styling in this direction;
  • urban: for the style, the predominant ones will be monochrome fabrics of a light dim color (or models with subtle patterns);
  • ethnostyle: suitable for the direction of the fabric with zigzag patterns in different colors;
  • style of the 50s: bright fabrics with repeating smooth patterns perfectly complement the direction;
  • Oriental: for a style suitable materials in a dark color with gold or silver patterns;
  • classic: a great solution would be the choice of canvases with a dark background and eye-catching, repeating patterns, stripes.

Wall decoration in the living room

In a spacious room to decorate the walls with fabrics can be a variety of ways. The most advantageous design options include:

  • fabric decoration for all walls of the living room;

You can hold the cloths or their tension for each surface. In this case, it is allowed to use two materials of the same color with different patterns (for example, decorate a couple of walls with strips of cloth, the rest with cloth with ornate patterns).

  • the allocation of recreation areas;

Behind the sofa and a pair of chairs designed for relaxing with friends and family leisure, you can place any on the brightness and saturation of the fabric (not contrary to the style and overall color scheme). Unusual decoration will give the room an original look, and at the same time will not distract the owners from the rest.

  • stylization of the wall, located opposite the recreation area.

This design allows you to select the wall in front of the sofa and chairs. For decoration it is recommended to select fabrics with dim colors and inconspicuous patterns or no patterns at all.

Wall decoration in the bedroom

Unusual decoration of the bedroom fabric finish allows you to emphasize its originality and comfort. The best options for using textiles in the living room include:

  • highlighting the head of the bed;

Here the usual sticking of the fabric or the full drape of the wall is allowed. It will be unusual to look not at the full decoration of the surface, but at the selection of a rectangular zone behind the headboard (although the fabric should slightly protrude on the side of the headboard). You can make a stylish niche with light inside which will be glued with fabric.

  • allocation of a sleeping bed;

In this embodiment, you can place a couple of strips of fabric on the sides of the bed (for example, behind the bedside tables). It will also look good and sticking, nailing cloths on two walls, near which the bed is located (that is, behind the headboard and to the left or right of the bed).

  • highlighting the entrance or wall opposite the bed.

It will create a special comfort and help the owners start every morning in a great mood.

Care instructions

Cleaning fabric finishes must necessarily be carried out dry. Any wetting of the surface may cause stains and streaks on it. Therefore, to gently remove accumulated dust you need to use a vacuum cleaner. You will need to purchase a special nozzle (with a soft coating) for cleaning furniture and various textile coatings. It will also help to maintain the original state of fabric finishing following these recommendations:

  1. When installing the air conditioner, keep in mind that the dust particles that are being carried by the flow will settle on the surface of the canvases. Therefore, it is not recommended to hang the air conditioner in front of the fabric wall or in a room with walls fully decorated with fabric.
  2. In sunny rooms should prevent the burning of the fabric. Therefore, the finish should immediately be placed on the walls, where the sun's rays do not fall, or close the windows with thick curtains during the period when the sun penetrates into the room.
  3. In rooms with fabric trim you need to maintain low humidity. If necessary, the installation of a desiccant is recommended.

Textile wallpaper as an alternative to fabric finishing

A good substitute for gluing or stuffing fabric on the walls can be textile wallpaper. In their appearance, they are somewhat similar to ordinary fabrics, but they are produced according to a special technology: by gluing a web or individual layers of fibers onto the base. The very basis of materials can be paper or non-woven. The first option has an affordable price, but the duration of the preservation of the original appearance of such a finish is rather doubtful: a heavy canvas can last for many years or soon begin to peel off. Textile wallpaper on non-woven base have a higher price, but also persist longer. For additional protection, this type of finish can be covered with a colorless varnish or polymer film. This ensures minimum damage to materials and their slow burnout in the sun. But you only need to stick on textile wallpapers on a perfectly flat wall. Despite the possibility of hiding irregularities with structural finishing, the presence of drops will lead to quick peeling of the material.

Conclusion

The correct selection of fabric in composition, quality and color is a guarantee of the original decoration of the walls in the house. True, such materials should be used only in residential and living rooms: in the kitchen or in the hallway they will be subject to significant negative impacts and will soon lose their appeal.
