Decorative Wall Painting Techniques

Original decorative painting of walls is able to quickly transform any kind of premises - residential or non-residential. A huge variety of dyes, textures, color combinations, methods of application, will allow you to arrange an apartment, private house, office in accordance with their own ideas about beauty, and the costs will be relatively small.

The advantages of decorative paints

There are many positive qualities of dyes - a finishing material for wall decoration:

  • they retain a good appearance for a relatively long time - many times more than a simple plaster, wallpaper;
  • in stores, in the construction markets there is a huge choice of colors, effects;
  • on the plane that is painted, there are no joints - it is covered with a uniform layer of pigment;
  • due to high water resistance, the material is suitable for kitchen walls, bathroom;
  • the use of water-based composition creates an environmentally friendly coating that does not cause allergies, does not emit toxins, which is important when finishing the nursery;
  • if you want to repaint the room, it is not necessary to remove the previous layer;
  • Painting compositions perfectly fall on plasterboard, plastered, concrete, wooden, walls of the OSB slabs.

The main thing that is required from the decorative wall covering is the uniformity of its application.

Types of decorative paints

Decorative dye contains various additives, has a more thick consistency than ordinary, creates a very unusual design, and the appearance of the coating depends on the thickness of the application. Such compositions are divided into two main types: for exterior and interior work. According to the type of film-forming component, four groups are distinguished: acrylic, water-emulsion, latex, alkyd. It is possible to paint them not only walls, but also a ceiling, doors, separate elements of a decor.

If the painting experience is absent or minimal, one should not undertake the implementation of complex patterns, starting with the most simple ones.

Acrylic

This type is the most popular, belongs to the water-dispersion, invented in the middle of the twentieth century. The composition has an acrylic resin, which creates a coating of high strength, elasticity, polymer emulsion, pigment. The dye retains its color for a long time, but for rooms where there is high humidity, such material is not used. It is easy to apply, dries in thirty to forty minutes. Separate versions are used for an art list of walls of any rooms, facades of buildings, and are on sale as in banks on 0,5-4,5 kg., And in the form of aerosols in barrels.

Latex

Latex dyes are created on a water-dispersion basis, incorporate rubber, which forms an elastic, very durable film coating that is resistant to the effects of sunlight and water ingress. There is no harmful "chemistry" in them, because the material is suitable even for a children's bedroom, any internal premises that do not have sharp temperature drops, strong drafts. Available in three types: glossy, matte, semi-matte.
The dye is easily applied to any substrate - the film is very elastic, it beautifully repeats the surface relief. The coating is vapor-permeable, durable, inexpensive. Apply it only on a perfectly flat surface.

Before painting, it is desirable to treat the surface with antifungal agents.

Water emulsion

Refers to water dispersion, contains pigments, polymers, water. The coating leaves moisture resistant - when water gets on such a wall, it evaporates, but does not penetrate inside. The composition is completely non-toxic, fireproof, fits well on any surface except lacquered and adhesive, has almost no odor, is not suitable for wall coating in wet rooms, excessively smooth surfaces. It is easy to apply with a brush, roller, spray gun, the drying time depends on humidity, temperature in the room - an average of 3-24 hours.

Alkyd, oil

They are used to protect surfaces in rooms where there are high temperatures, strong humidity. The composition contains alkyd resins that increase the service life of the coating. Saturated color persists for a long time, but when applied, dried, the paint is strong, it smells unpleasant. Since alkyd resins can harm human health, these compounds are used exclusively for exterior decoration or in non-residential, well-ventilated spaces.

Oil is composed of linseed oil, pigment, fillers. As pigments use:

  • soot;
  • graphite powder;
  • white (zinc, lead, titanium);
  • iron salts;
  • lead oxides, cobalt, etc.

Oil formulations are applied in a thin, even layer, avoiding drips that spoil the appearance. An excessively thick layer dries long, looks worse.

Silicone

The composition contains organic elements, resin, in some cases - acrylic copolymers, but there are almost no "aggressive" components that are harmful to health. The uniqueness of these materials lies in the fact that they have an oxygen-containing resin, the structure of which is close to quartz particles.

The paint is durable, moisture resistant, heat resistant, conveniently applied with a spray gun or a brush, suitable for internal, external works, there is a huge variety of colors. It is not suitable for concrete surfaces, it is heavily spent on wood, it is relatively expensive. There are two groups - protective emulsions and primers.

Silicone compounds should be applied only at positive temperatures.

Silicate formulations

Created on the basis of "liquid glass" with ethyl silicate, polymers. Suitable for facades, any interior. The material is very durable, often zinc and aluminum pigments are added to it, which gives the coating anti-corrosion properties. For greater density, chalk, mica, talc and others are included.

These compositions are used for various surfaces - cement, limestone, plastered, brick. Completely not suitable for all types of plastic, natural wood, some types of artificial stone. There are two types of silicon silicate and silicate dispersion.

Experts recommend the use of such paints where there is a high probability of damage by fungi, mold.

How to prepare the walls for painting

When the wall is painted for the first time, its surface needs to be gradually prepared for such a design. What exactly do:

  • remove the old finish;
  • ground plane;
  • cover up various flaws;
  • putty, grind irregularities;
  • ground again;
  • waiting for the putty to dry completely.

At the end of the preparatory work, the wall is fully ready for decorative painting.

Small rooms with an area of three to six meters square, with no windows (such as a hall, bathroom) should not be painted in excessively cold, dark colors. It is also advisable to refuse large bright drawings - such a room will look very small.

Required materials, tools

To paint the walls of the room will need approximately the following set of tools:

  • rollers;
  • sponges;
  • tray;
  • spatulas - steel, plastic, rubber, gear;
  • hard brushes;
  • sandpaper;
  • stencils - if you want to depict a clear ornament;
  • mixer or special nozzle on the drill - for stirring;
  • masking tape - to protect places that are not planned to be painted.

Before starting work, you should think about what kind of effect you plan to get in order not to buy a bunch of unnecessary tools.

Application Methods

Professional decorative paints have a high cost, therefore, cheaper analogues are often used, which, if used properly, create a no less beautiful decor. There are many examples of coloring - they are "star dust" and "crumpled skin", "silk effect" and "pearl effect", "ombr" and the effect of an unpainted surface, Venetian plaster and stippling, application of stencils and special electrical tape.

It is not advisable to use in the same room more than two or three contrasting colors - this greatly overloads the interior, especially in small rooms.

With stencils

Stencil - the most original way to quickly transform any room, as well as:

  • visually change the shape of the room;
  • "refresh" the interior;
  • organize a niche;
  • "hide" the doorway;
  • mask the flaws of the painted plane.

If you use a home-made stencil with an image that repeats on textiles, the design of the room will become complete, and it is not necessary to be an artist.
Stencils are distinguished by the methods of applying paint:

  • monochrome - one dye is used;
  • multi-color - two or more colors are used;
  • volumetric - a peculiar bas-relief is formed on the wall, two or three mm high;
  • reverse - paint over the space around the picture.

There are disposable and reusable options. The stencil is made by hand or ordered from experts with any desired pattern. The most popular are vegetable, floral motifs, stylized animal figurines, regular geometric shapes, plot abstractions, monograms and meanders.

Paint through the stencil is applied with brushes, roller, foam pad, spray.

Stardust effect

This option is used for both walls and ceilings. If you use gold, silver paint on a dark background, the design will come out the most exquisite.
How it's done:

  • the wall is painted in the desired color or several;
  • brush dipped in paint, slightly squeezed;
  • after it is bent in the opposite direction in such a way that the dye splashes fall on the painted plane - it is also allowed to use two or three or more different colors.

For work it is better to use a hard brush.

Stippling - the effect of aging

With this method of finishing, the wall looks like it is “shabby,” worn, very old, for that:

  • stained in the right color;
  • an acrylic layer is applied on top to obtain a contrast;
  • covered with colored glaze, combined with painted wall;
  • smooth the glaze on the wall as smoothly as possible with a flat brush;
  • a round-shaped paint brush randomly touches various places, which gives the surface the effect of antiquity.

The method has a minus: in the presence of multiple bumps, "holes", they all become visible to the naked eye.

The design is very suitable loft styles, art believe.

Skin effect

The result of painting looks as if the walls of the room are covered with leather, which looks very solid in the office, office, various expensive interiors - baroque, empire, classical.
Finishing is as follows:

  • the surface is pre-prepared;
  • the walls are covered with paint having latex in the composition;
  • glaze mixed with latex paint, but the tone is chosen a little darker than the main;
  • the above mixture covers a small section of the wall, with a brush made of suede, pre-moistened with water, wrung out, with the help of light touches is carried out over a still wet surface, creating smooth decorative streaks, sometimes removing excess;
  • when there are lines that are highly visible, they are soaked with wet suede, cut into pieces, creating a semblance of a skin-covered surface.

The effect of crumpled skin

Beautiful coverage is done step by step, requires some time-consuming:

  • you need pearl glaze, acrylic primer, vinyl dye of two shades;
  • a paper square is taken from a decorative material, a fragment of the wall is smeared under its size;
  • the leaf is crumpled, applied to the plane, after it needs to be smoothed, to make a "wrinkled" coating;
  • process the whole wall with such pieces.

Venetian plaster effect

This option is one of the most decorative. Used in the interiors of Art Deco, Classical, Gothic, etc. To create the "Venetian" do the following:

  • in a wide bowl pour latex paint;
  • Pigment for paints is sprinkled from one side, gently stirring it with a stick - dark and light parts will come out;
  • a lighter dye is taken with a spatula, applied as a plaster;
  • after applying a dark composition, covered part of the wall;
  • when dark and light fragments came out, they were carefully spread with a spatula across the surface from side to side to make it beautiful;
  • at the end, the plane is ground with fine sandpaper and rubbed with wax.

To get it right, it is advisable to use only plastic spatulas.

Painting with a rag roller

To paint the wall, often used conventional textile rollers - they create the original design, very suitable for children's rooms. Such a roller has convex patterns on the surface. The wall looks far from perfect, but its shortcomings become imperceptible. How it's done:

  • put the first layer of dye, wait until it dries;
  • one more shade of the main color is bred, but two or three tones darker;
  • the fabric is moistened in paint, twisted to form a tow, wrapped in a roller;
  • painting is done from top to bottom in different directions, so that the texture pattern comes out.

It is advisable to use textured ink composition - it looks much better than usual.

Contrast staining with masking tape

Strips - a simple but original version of decoration, giving the room dynamism. With their help, various effects are achieved that change the shape of the space - the vertical lines will visually make the room higher, the horizontal ones will expand the room, the diagonal ones look very original. Stick adhesive tape in the right direction, paint the "empty" space, wait for drying paint, peel off the tape - get a "striped" wall.

Zigzag or ChevronFor the image, the wall will have to pre-mark, stick along the markup pieces of scotch, then paint. Design looks very original, suitable for a variety of interiors.
Herringbone PatternVertical lines from floor to ceiling intersect with oblique, arranged in the form of "Christmas trees" and "inverted Christmas trees." This location is perfect for children, hallways, kitchens.
"Spider"Very fashionable pattern to date. Masking tape is glued randomly, inclined, intersecting lines from ceiling to floor. Figure goes asymmetrical.
"Geometry"This design is also "in trend" the last few years. It looks like a cobweb with its asymmetry, but the emphasis is not on external lines, but inside. The figures are separated from each other by strips or run completely without edging.
Partial paintingHere a third or two thirds of the wall is painted, and sometimes a wide contrasting strip is made in the middle. If you want to disguise the door, it is painted in the same way - this design will suit the style of minimalism, hi-tech.
Zone selectionThe work area, dining room, playroom, sleeping area are highlighted in color, which is very convenient to use in studio apartments. It can be a bright rectangle or a figure framed with straight lines.

Conclusion

Decorative paint creates a finishing finish, helping to get almost any desired texture. The original version of painting walls is easy to do with your own hands, but when it comes to decorating large spaces, you need a skilled assistant or even a whole team of professional painters who will quickly and efficiently cope with the task.
